Highway Patrol Sturgis Rally Daily Information Compiled from 6 a.m. Saturday August 6, 2022, to 6 a.m. Thursday August 11, 2022.

 At 6:17 a.m., Wednesday, Dickson Drive, within Sturgis city limits: A 2020 Volvo semi-truck and trailer was eastbound on Interstate 90, near mile marker 32, went off the roadway to the right, eventually into a private yard, and hit the front of a residential home. The 68-year-old female driver of the truck and the 65-year-old male passenger both suffered minor injuries and were taken to the Sturgis hospital. The driver was wearing a seatbelt and the passenger was not. The 74-year-old male resident of the home was not injured.

At 9 a.m., Wednesday, west of the Nemo Road and Vanocker Canyon Road intersection, within Nemo city limits: Two motorcycles were westbound together on Nemo Road at the intersection of the Vanocker Canyon Road when the male driver of a 2005 Harley-Davidson Heritage motorcycle hit his brakes and lost control on a curve. The male driver of the second motorcycle, a 2009 Harley-Davidson FXDL Dyna Low Glide motorcycle, also lost control. Both motorcycles went across the centerline and into the opposite lane. The Heritage motorcycle came to rest in the south ditch and the Dyna Low Glide motorcycle against a guard rail. Both the 76-year-old driver of the Heritage and the 66-year-old driver of the Dyna Low Glide suffered minor injuries. Each were treated on scene. Both were wearing helmets.

At 10:38 a.m., Wednesday, U.S. Highway 16A, mile marker 37, 12 miles east of Custer: A 2005 Harley-Davidson FXD motorcycle was westbound on U.S. Highway 16A when the driver failed to negotiate a curve and the motorcycle went into the ditch. The 52-year-old male driver received serious non-life threatening injuries and was taken to the Rapid City hospital. He was wearing a helmet.

At 6:58 p.m., Wednesday, U.S. Highway 85, mile marker 64, seven miles north of Belle Fourche: A 2019 Ford F350 Super Duty pickup was southbound on U.S. Highway 85 when it crossed into the northbound lane and collided with a 2007 Peterbilt semi-truck and trailer. The 22-year-old male driver of the pickup received serious non-life threatening injuries and was taken to the Spearfish hospital. He was wearing a seatbelt. The 29-year-old male driver of the semi-truck was not injured. He was wearing a seatbelt.

At 8:31 p.m., Wednesday, U.S. Highway 14A, mile marker 39, a half-mile east of Central City: A 2007 Harley-Davidson motorcycle collided with a deer in the roadway. The 73-year-old male driver received serious non-life threatening injuries and was transported to the Rapid City hospital. He was not wearing a helmet.

At 10:30 a.m., South Dakota Highway 44, mile marker 88, within the city limits of Scenic: Three motorcycles were eastbound on South Dakota Highway 34. A 2019 Harley-Davidson Trike stopped on the shoulder of the road and then attempted a U-turn. A 2012 Harley-Davidson motorcycle collided with the trike and a 2018 Harley-Davidson Trike then struck the motorcycle. The 66-year-old female passenger on the 2018 trike was pronounced dead at the scene. The 71-year-old male driver suffered serious non-life threatening injuries and was transported to a Rapid City hospital. Neither was wearing a helmet. The 62-year-old male driver of the motorcycle sustained serious non-life threatening injuries and was transported to a Rapid City hospital. He was not wearing a helmet. The 64-year-old male driver of the 2019 trike received minor injuries and was taken to a Rapid City hospital. He was not wearing a helmet. The 58-year-old female passenger was not injured. She was wearing a helmet.

At 11:23 a.m., Tuesday, intersection of South Dakota Highway 89 and South Dakota Highway 87, five miles north of Custer: A 2009 Harley-Davidson FLHRC motorcycle was southbound on South Dakota Highway 83 when the 51-year-old female driver failed to negotiate a turn. She suffered serious non-life threatening injuries and was taken to the Custer hospital. She was not wearing a helmet.

At 12:25 p.m., Tuesday, U.S. Highway 18, mile marker 19, eight miles east of Sturgis: A 2006 Nissan Titan vehicle pulling a trailer eastbound on U.S. Highway 18 when the driver lost control. The vehicle and trailer tipped over in the eastbound lane. The 52-year-old female driver sustained minor injuries and the 57-year-old male passenger was partially ejected and sustained serious non-life threatening injuries. Both were taken to the Hot Springs hospital. Neither occupant wore a seatbelt.

At 1:20 p.m., Tuesday, Vanocker Road, mile marker 11, six miles south of Sturgis: A 2009 Harley-Davidson FLF motorcycle was northbound on Vanocker Road when the driver failed to negotiate a left-hand curve. The motorcycle went off the road to the right and hit rocks. The 60-year-old male driver sustained serious non-life threatening injuries and was transferred to the Sturgis hospital. He was not wearing a helmet.

At 5:15 p.m., Tuesday, South Dakota Highway 79, mile marker 112, two miles north of Sturgis: A 2019 Harley-Davidson FLHXS motorcycle was southbound on South Dakota Highway 79 when it rear-ended a 2019 Indian Chieftain motorcycle. The 61-year-old male driver of the Harley-Davidson suffered serious non-life threatening injuries and was transported to the Sturgis hospital. The 62-year-old male driver of the Indian Chieftain motorcycle was not injured. Neither was wearing a helmet.

At 6:50 p.m., Tuesday, Pleasant Valley Road, five miles south of Sturgis: A 2017 Harley-Davidson FLTRXS motorcycle was eastbound on Pleasant Valley Road when the driver lost control. The 56-year-old female driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to the Sturgis hospital. She was not wearing a helmet.

At 7:42 p.m., Tuesday, at the intersection of Lazelle Street and 14th Street, within the city limits of Sturgis: A 2005 Harley-Davidson XL883C motorcycle was westbound on Lazelle Street when it lost control. The 48-year-old driver sustained minor injuries, but was not transported. He was wearing a helmet.

At 10:21 a.m., Monday, South Dakota Highway 34, mile marker 3, six miles west of Belle Fourche: A 2003 Harley-Davidson FLTHI motorcycle was westbound on South Dakota Highway 34 when it slowed down to make a right-hand turn. It was reared end by a westbound 2018 Honda GLI800 motorcycle. The 68-year-old male driver of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle was thrown from the motorcycle. He suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Spearfish hospital. The 70-year-old male driver of the Honda was not injured. Neither driver was wearing a helmet.

At 10:40 a.m., Monday, U.S. Highway 14A, mile marker 25, 10 miles west of Lead: A 2014 Cam-Am Spyder RT Limited motorcycle was southbound on U.S. Highway 14A when the driver over-corrected. The vehicle went into the west ditch and rolled. The driver was thrown from the motorcycle. The 75-year-old male driver sustained serious non-life threatening injuries and was taken to the Lead Deadwood hospital. He was wearing a helmet.

At 11:04 a.m., Monday, intersection of Alkali Road and 132nd Avenue, at Buffalo Chip entrance:  A 2005 Toyota 4Runner stopped at the entrance of the Buffalo Chip and then entered Alkali Road where the driver failed to see a 2005 Harley-Davidson VRSC that was eastbound on Alkali Road. The motorcycle driver swerved to miss the vehicle, but lost control of the motorcycle. The 68-year-old male driver of the motorcycle sustained minor injuries and was transported to the Sturgis hospital. He was wearing a helmet. The 26-year-old female driver of the Toyota was not injured. She was wearing a seatbelt.

At 12:20 p.m., Monday, U.S. Highway 85, mile marker 4, 19 miles south of Lead: A 2007 Harley-Davidson Road King was northbound on U.S. Highway 85 when the driver failed to negotiate a right-hand curve. The motorcycle went into the east ditch. The 51-year-old male driver suffered minor injuries and declined medical treatment. He was not wearing a helmet.

At 1:06 p.m., Monday, U.S. Highway 16A, mile marker 39, 13 miles west of Hermosa: A 2007 Harley-Davidson FLHX motorcycle was westbound on U.S. Highway 16A when the driver failed to negotiate a corner. The driver hit a guardrail, suffered minor injuries, and was taken to the Rapid City hospital. He was not wearing a helmet.

At 4:30 p.m., Monday, South Dakota Highway 87, mile marker 66, seven miles northeast of Custer: A 2005 Suzuki Vulcan motorcycle was southbound on South Dakota Highway 87, when the driver exited a turn, left the roadway and entered the ditch. The 67-year-old male driver was thrown from the motorcycle and suffered minor injuries. He was taken to the Custer hospital. He was wearing a helmet.

At 8:10 p.m., Monday, U.S. Highway 14A, mile marker 35, two mile west of Lead: A 1982 Honda Goldwing motorcycle was westbound on U.S. Highway 14A when the driver failed to negotiate a left-hand curve. The motorcycle tipped over onto its side. The 25-year-old male driver sustained minor injuries, but was not transported. He was wearing a helmet.

At 8:49 p.m., Monday, intersection of Interstate 90 and Deadwood Avenue, within city limits of Rapid City: A 2017 Harley-Davidson Road King was southbound on Deadwood Avenue when it failed to stop for the red traffic signal. It collided with a 2019 Harley-Davidson Heritage Classic motorcycle which was making a left turn northbound onto Deadwood Avenue after exiting Interstate 90. The 24-year-old male driver of the Road King motorcycle received serious non-life threatening injuries, but was not transported. He was not wearing a helmet. The 40-year-old male driver of the Heritage Classic motorcycle sustained minor injuries while the 16-year-old male passenger suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. Both were wearing helmets.

At 2:25 p.m., Sunday, Interstate 90, mile marker 47, two miles west of Summerset: An eastbound 1986 Honda GLI200 motorcycle swerved to miss an eastbound 2006 GMC Envoy which was ahead of it. The motorcycle hit the Envoy and the driver was thrown from the motorcycle. An eastbound 2005 Harley Davidson FLHRS Road King motorcycle hit the first motorcycle that was lying in the roadway. The 51-year-old male driver of the Road King was thrown from the motorcycle and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was wearing a helmet. The 64-year-old male driver of the Honda motorcycle suffered serious non-life threatening injuries and was taken to the Sturgis hospital. He was not wearing a helmet. The 48-year-old male driver of the Envoy was not injured. Seatbelt use is under investigation.

At 10:45 a.m., Sunday, U.S. Highway 14A, mile marker 47, four miles south of Sturgis: A 2006 Yamaha Stratoliner motorcycle was southbound on U.S. Highway 14A when the driver lost control when he suddenly stopped. Both the 39-year-old male driver and the 45-year-old female passenger sustained minor injuries and were taken to the Deadwood hospital. They were not wearing helmets.

At 11:15 a.m., Sunday, Highway 87, mile marker 72, on Needles Highway: A 2018 Harley-Davidson Touring Motorcycle was southbound on South Dakota Highway 87 when the driver lost control. The 67-year-old male driver sustained serious non-life threatening injuries. He was transported to the Custer hospital. He was wearing a helmet.

At 12:15 p.m., Sunday, Highway 87, mile marker 78, one mile near U.S. Highway 385: A 2005 Harley-Davidson motorcycle was southbound on South Dakota Highway 87 when the driver lost control while negotiating the curve, slid across the opposing lane and entered the ditch. The 20-year-old male driver sustained serious non-life threatening injuries. He was wearing a helmet.

At 1:53 p.m., Sunday, U.S. Highway 16A, mile marker 36, 13 miles east of Custer: A 2015 Harley-Davidson FLHX motorcycle was westbound on U.S. Highway 16A and tried to turn left into the east entrance of Wildlife Loop Road. The 67-year-old driver failed to negotiate the corner and tipped over the motorcycle. The driver, who was wearing a helmet, suffered non-life threatening injuries. He was transported to a Rapid City hospital.

At 3 p.m., Sunday, U.S. Highway 16A, mile marker 46, within city limits in Keystone: A 2006 Harley-Davidson motorcycle was northbound on U.S. Highway 16A when the driver lost control and the motorcycle went into the ditch. The 69-year-old male driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to the Rapid City hospital. He was wearing a helmet.

At 5:58 p.m., Sunday, the intersection of U.S. Highway 14A and Wall Street in Deadwood: A 2016 Indian motorcycle was turning right from Wall Street onto U.S. Highway 14A when the 58-year-old female driver lost control. She sustained minor injuries and was taken to the Lead Deadwood hospital. She was wearing a helmet.

At 6:31 p.m., Sunday, U.S. Highway 85, mile marker 3, 12 miles southwest of Cheyenne Crossing: A 2009 Harley-Davidson FXLRS motorcycle left U.S. Highway 85 and hit a tree. Both the 67-year-old male driver and the 66-year-old female passenger received serious non-life threatening injuries. The driver was airlifted to the Rapid City hospital and the passenger was transported to the Lead Deadwood hospital. Both were wearing helmets.

At 6:38 p.m., Sunday, near the intersection of Sturgis Road and Piedmont Meadows Road, 12 miles southeast of Sturgis: A 2011 Harley-Davidson FLT motorcycle failed to negotiate a curve on Sturgis Road, entered the west ditch and struck a fence post. The 60-year-old male driver sustained serious non-life threatening injuries and was taken to the Rapid City hospital. He was wearing a helmet.

At 7:53 p.m., Sunday, Interstate 90, mile marker 78, near Exit 78 (New Underwood exit): A motorcycle was westbound on Interstate 90 when a mechanical failure caused the driver to lose control. Both passengers were thrown from the motorcycle. The 74-year-old male driver sustained minor injuries and the 73-year-old female passenger sustained life threatening injuries. Both were transported to the Rapid City hospital. Neither wore a helmet.

At 2:15 a.m., Monday, Interstate 90, mile marker 33, one mile east of Sturgis: A 2020 Harley-Davidson FLTRX motorcycle was eastbound on Interstate 90 when the motorcycle left the roadway, traveled through the median and down into a ravine. The 26-year-old male driver sustained serious non-life threatening injures and transported to the Sturgis hospital. He was not wearing a helmet.

At 10:57 a.m., Saturday, South Dakota Highway 34, mile marker 157, 18 miles west of Hayes: A 2013 Harley-Davidson FLHX motorcycle was westbound on South Dakota Highway 34 when it rear-ended a second westbound 2013 Harley-Davidson FLHX motorcycle that had slowed down. The 58-year-old male driver of the first motorcycle died later at a Rapid City hospital. The 68-year-old male driver of the second motorcycle sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to the Philip hospital. Neither driver was wearing a helmet.

At 12:25 p.m., Saturday, U.S. Highway 14A, mile marker 35, two miles southeast of Lead: A 2020 Harley-Davidson FLTRX motorcycle was northbound on U.S. Highway 14A when the vehicle left the roadway, struck the edge of a guardrail and went into the ditch. The 46-year-old male driver was thrown from the motorcycle and sustained serious non-life threatening injuries. He was taken to a Rapid City hospital. He was not wearing a helmet.

At 12:40 p.m., Saturday, intersection of Nemo Road and Vanocker Canyon Road, within the Nemo city limits: A 2016 Harley-Davidson motorcycle was westbound on Nemo Road at the intersection with Vanocker Canyon Road when the driver lost control on a curve and crossed the centerline where it collided with an eastbound 2018 Harley-Davidson Ultra Tri Glide. The 66-year-old male driver of the 2016 motorcycle sustained serious non-life threatening injuries and was airlifted to a Rapid City hospital. He was wearing a helmet. The 78-year-old male driver and the 73-year-old female passenger, both on the Tri Glide motorcycle, were not injured. They were not wearing helmets.

At 8:57 p.m., Saturday, U.S. Highway 16, mile marker 25, within the city limits of Custer: A 2006 Ford Expedition stopped at a stop sign and then turned left onto U.S. Highway 16. It collided with a 2003 Harley-Davidson motorcycle which was westbound on U.S. Highway 16. The 66-year-old female driver of the Expedition was not injured. She was wearing a seatbelt. The 60-year-old male driver and the 58-year-old female passenger, both on the motorcycle, each sustained minor injuries and were transported to the Custer hospital. The passenger was wearing a helmet, the driver was not wearing a helmet.

At 2:11 a.m., Sunday, Interstate 90, mile marker 24, one mile east of Whitewood: A 2022 Indian motorcycle was eastbound on Interstate 90 when it left the roadway, entered the median and struck a speed limit sign. The 63-year-old male driver was not wearing a helmet and sustained serious non-life threatening injuries. He was first taken to the Spearfish hospital and later transferred to the Rapid City hospital.
